Ways To Overcome Your Fear
A very common and old saying states:
"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds
confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think
about it. Go out and get busy."
--Dale Carnegie
Many of us have one
or two irrational fears-such as spiders or our annual dental checkups. This is
a minor fear for most people. The fear of something becomes a phobia when it
causes you extreme anxiety and interferes with your everyday life.
Having phobias makes
it hard to control your feelings despite realizing that they are irrational.
You may become anxious even if you only think about the feared object. As soon
as you come into contact with something you fear, your terror is almost
automatic and overwhelming.
It can be so nerve
wracking that you may go to great lengths to avoid the experience - whether
that means changing your lifestyle or inconveniencing yourself. People who
suffer from claustrophobia might decide not to accept a lucrative job offer if
they have to take the elevator to the office.
Positive
Reinforcement
Negative emotions are
increased when we dwell on negative events. This reinforces our perception of
the world as scary by noticing and remembering the negative events. Instead,
you can increase positive emotions by noticing and remembering positive events. By practicing
deliberate observation—noticing when someone we love is with us, the pleasure
of the weather, the beauty of nature, the joy of an excursion, or the humor of
the situation—we can change those and improve our lives. Positivity is the best
way to overcome your fear.
Positive thinking
broadens our perspective, which gives us more options because of a wider view. Positivity
builds resilience, which allows us to function in difficult times. The more we
practice positivity, the more we build it.
Taking Small
Steps
There is nothing
wrong with wanting to avoid what you fear. However, conquering your phobias
occurs when you face them. Even though avoidance may cause a short-term
improvement in your mood, it hinders you from discovering that your fears are
not as overwhelming as you think. It's impossible to experience control over a
situation when you cannot cope with your fears. You then become increasingly
frightened and overwhelmed by the phobia.
By gradually and
continually being exposed to things you fear, in a controlled and safe manner,
you can overpower a phobia effectively. The exposure will teach you how to overcome your fear and anxiety
until they eventually pass. To face your fears, you'll need to face them repeatedly. Each
exposure will strengthen your feeling of control and give you more confidence.
As time goes on, the phobia's power diminishes.
Meaningful
Experiences
Having fear can make
it difficult for us to understand the world around us. Traumatized individuals
are likely to have also suffered losses that further cause them to question the
meaning of life. Trauma survivors often feel guilty about what happened,
illogically believing that they could have prevented it.
It is important to
rediscover a sense of purpose, regardless of whether we suffer from anxiety or
trauma. There
many examples that shows the possibility that people become healthier after
trauma can regain their sense of security about the world and find meaning in
the traumatic experience.
Gain The Skill Of
Quickly Calming Down
A racing heart and a
suffocating sensation are common physical symptoms of fear and anxiety. The physical
sensations of your phobia can exacerbate your phobia, which can be frightening.
When you ensure that you have mastered the skill of calming down quickly,
however, you will be more confident in your ability to live with uncomfortable
sensations and withstand your fears.
Deep breathing is a
simple exercise that can be performed. Hyperventilating (aka hyperventilating
when you're anxious) adds to the physical symptoms of anxiety because it causes
you to take incredibly shallow breaths. Rather than feeling tense, short of
breath, and anxious, breathe deeply from the abdomen to reverse these physical
feelings. Feel happy and calm while practicing the exercise to get comfortable.
Walking In
Nature
In nature, fear and
anxiety reduces, and pleasant feelings increases, as evidenced in the new field
of nature-based therapies. The words calm, beauty, happiness, hope, and
aliveness describe how people feel when admiring natural beauty. Experiencing
nature improves people's emotional health and their physical health, reducing
blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress
hormones - all of which are signs of stress and fear.
Go for a run or walk
in a park when you are dealing with feelings of fear or anxiety. Physical
exercise will also improve your mood along with the restorative effects of
nature.
